22.02.23 - Help to preserve Madagascar biodiversity with AI, this is the goal of the project CAPTAIN

It is becoming increasingly difficult to take all the competing interests and constraints into account when planning protected areas for species conservation.

Daniele Silvestro from Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg and researchers from England and Sweden therefore decided to develop an AI that could help them find the best solution. CAPTAIN (Conservation Area Prioritization Through Artificial INtelligence) integrates different parameters such as species richness, economic value or influence of climate change to determine which plots should be preserved.

Developed to help preserve Madagascar’s exceptional biodiversity, it provides better results than the most widely used solution, Marxan. Its developers do not rule out its extension to other cases, such as the protection of biodiversity in other parts of the world.
