17.03.23 - Sentinel-1 for Science Amazonas: processing of billions of radar images

An ESA-led project, Sentinel-1 for Science Amazonas has processed billions of radar images over the entire Amazon. They created a dynamic deforestation analysis over the region.

From January 2017 to November 2021, the team detected forest loss of over 5.2 million hectares, which is roughly the size of Costa Rica.

Illustration below shows the map of the Amazon rainforest with the observed forest loss visible in red.

This project leverage the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission: since 2015, the world’s tropical forests can be observed regularly at an unprecedented 6 to 12 day interval.

This exciting project shows the possibilities offered by satellite image technologies (#remotesensing) to observe changes and brings facts that hopefully will trigger political authorities to implement concrete actions to prevent it. Thanks to new data science methods, nothing can be hidden from the images taken from space!
