14.03.23 - Have you ever wondered what Europe looked like in the past? Time Machine Europe

Have you ever wondered what Europe looked like in the past? How did people live, work, and create? How did culture and heritage evolve over time? If you are curious about these questions, you might be interested in the  Time Machine Europe : https://lnkd.in/d_FCPBr. This is one of the most ambitious research projects in the field of cultural heritage and emerging technology. It aims to create a collective digital information system mapping the European economic, social, cultural, and geographical evolution across time.

The project is funded by the European Commission. It brings together over 280 institutions from 33 European countries, including universities, libraries, archives, museums, and research centers. The project is coordinated by the Time Machine Organisation (TMO), a non-profit association based in Switzerland.

One of the main outcomes of the project is the development of innovative GIS technology that allows users to explore and interact with historical maps and data. The technology combines artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and 3D modeling to create realistic simulations of past landscapes and events. One example of this technology is the Venice Time Machine, which reconstructs 1000 years of the history of Venice using millions of digitized documents and images.

In order to exploit the full potential of the historical maps of the land registry, the Swiss Territorial Data Lab (STDL) team has just launched a new project, Vectorization of the historical cadastral map, together with the Canton of Geneva. We will explore the city of Geneva since the 1850s and try to build a database and 3D model of the history from the cadastral map shown below. If you have an interest in this project, feel free to contact us!
