12.04.23 - How about witnessing an archaeological excavation in real time?

How about witnessing an archaeological excavation in real time or exploring Pompeii from a school bench? A team of archaeologists is currently working on a solution to virtually explore a block of houses and gardens at the site of Pompeii.

Using satellite images, drone images, photos taken on the ground and LiDAR data, a 3D model and a digital twin of the block are being created.

One of the great advantages of this technology is that it allows the daily progress of the excavation to be recorded. This is essential because excavation is an irreversible action. Collecting historical knowledge in this way also means losing some of it by destroying the context. However, by using photogrammetry techniques on drone images, the progress of the excavation can be followed in 3D. Afterwards, it is always possible to virtually return to a previous stage!
